Hire a Local Trader

The kind of DBS check required depends on the nature of the work and the level of contact with vulnerable individuals you will have. Here are the types of DBS checks available:

  1. Basic DBS check (£18): This is the lowest level of check. It will show unspent convictions (convictions that have not yet reached a set period of time and after which they are considered ‘spent’).
  2. Standard DBS check (£18): Reveals both spent and unspent convictions, as well as cautions, warnings, and reprimands.
  3. Enhanced DBS check (£36): This includes everything in the standard check plus any additional information held by local police deemed relevant to the role.
  4. Enhanced DBS with barred list checks (£36): This includes everything in the enhanced check and also checks if the individual is on the list of people barred from the role they are applying for. This is most commonly needed if someone is working with vulnerable groups such as children or adults at risk.

For most tradespeople working in domestic settings (like plumbers, electricians, or builders), a basic DBS might suffice unless they are frequently working in settings with vulnerable individuals. However, if a tradesperson were working in a care home, for instance, they might require an enhanced check due to the nature of the environment.

This article is just basic information: Always ensure you’re requesting the appropriate level of check for the job at hand, and if in doubt, seek legal or professional advice.
